Is everything in life just numbers?

"When we would buy tickets she would say, "You know, Perry, life's all just one big goddamned lottery. Some of us have brains, some of us don't. Some people draw cancer. Others win car accidents or plane crashes. It's just a lottery. A goddamned lottery." I like to think Gram was happy. I did not win the brains lottery, but I won another kind. Then I start to wonder. Is there a happiness lottery too? A sadness lottery? Does God sit up in heaven drawing numbers for people? Like for Keith? Like for me? It makes me wonder about God. Is everything in life just numbers?"

This was one of my favorite parts of the book, I felt like I really connected at this point. I often find myself wondering the same thing. What will my life have in store? What about my family and friends? Is there a God? What is going to happen on my path? Where will I be in 25 years, will I even be here then? I sure hope so. But I think life is just like a lottery. You never know what you will get, win or loose.

This months book club at Tiana's was like no other. Tiana set up a meeting via Skype with the author of The Lottery, Patricia Wood. Honestly, this evening was a breath of fresh air. Talking to such a passionate woman was exactly what I needed. Hearing first hand that it is possible to do what you love everyday was so inspiring. And, Patricia was open to any questions/comments we had regarding the book. After an hour and a half Patricia shared with us three alternate book endings, tips about the writing process, and gave us a tour of her boat. So cool! This book club meeting was such a neat experience, I was so glad to be a part of it. And, to top it off, the book was fabulous!
